On the Cold War Kids 10th LP, the band keeps it strong with driving indie rock songs and dance jams. The Cold War Kids have always had a special knack for being consistent. Every album garners at least a couple great singles that reach number one on Alt Nation (Sirius XM) and end up making the best alt songs of the year countdown. Their new self-titled album keeps that trend going and more.

The opener “Double Life” has a pumped up beat. “When you live a double life it’s dangerous,” Nathan Willett sings. “Run away with me” blends their classic mix of catchy choruses with dance groves, leading to a shout along chorus. This single has already taken off in recent months.

I saw CWK at Bonnaroo back in 2011. The set included “Hospital Beds” and “Hang Me up to Dry.” I had already been a fan, but that show made me more interested in their music. I went on to see them at the 9:30 club in DC in 2013. Another classic show!

“Stray” has soul and piano upfront, with a sweet guitar riff that echoes from bars to bedrooms. The songs are quick, which keeps the record moving along.

They slow it down with “Another Name,” which has powerful piano chords that they ALWAYS do so well. “Sunday in the City” feels like a Sunday drive, proving they can do some soul if they want to. “Blame” is a standout track. It’s the bands current single. The build-up has urgency, and the chorus has a feel-good piano-rock singalong. So good.

“Empty Inside” is immediately memorable. Another key track. It has a dance vibe and will get fans moving. You might be empty inside but this song is going to make you feel good for a few minutes! “For Your Love” also has a cool piano intro, which is very CWK. “I need your love, take me higher and higher,” Willett sings.

CWK aren’t content with sticking to their hits, but taking it further and being relevant with new material. It’s been too long since I’ve seen them. I can only imagine how amazing their setlist is now. The band keeps on getting stronger.
